How can I get to Fitchburg?
The nearest major airports are in Boston MA , Manchester NH , and Providence RI. All three are approximately an hour from Fitchburg. It is possible (but complicated) to get from Logan Airport to downtown Fitchburg by train – you need to access the Boston-Fitchburg commuter rail line of the MBTA at North Station, which comes into downtown Fitchburg a short walk from Fitchburg State College – ground transportation is available there by arrangement with the MART. There is a small airport in Worcester, MA , which is only around half an hour away, but has very few flights. If you're driving, Fitchburg is a short hop out Route 2 from Boston. The Courtyard by Marriott, Fitchburg is on Route 31, just South of the interchange with Route 2.
Racer - General FAQs
How old is the race?
The race began in 1960 as a tribute to Arthur M. Longsjo, Jr. This year will mark the 49th edition of it. More information about the history of the race can be found on the History page.
How profitable is the race?
This is a non-profit event. Any money received from sponsors or racers is put back into the race, which is run by volunteers. The race also benefits the Longsjo Legacy of Champions Fund at the North Central Massachusetts Community Foundation which supports youth fitness programs and education.
How can I help?
We always need volunteers. We need dozens of course marshals, people to help with registration, and a hundred other assorted jobs. You're at least guaranteed a free T-shirt if you help out. All you need to do to volunteer is to contact us at info2008@longsjo.com. You can also call (978) 633-7025
What kind of race is this?
For the first few decades, this race was a criterium on a .9 mile, 3-corner loop through downtown Fitchburg . In the early 90's it expanded into a stage race. Though the stages have varied, this criterium has always been a part of the race. The Fitchburg Longsjo Classic in its current incarnation is a four-day stage race, with all four stages taking place in and around the town of Fitchburg, Massachusetts . The first stage is generally a time trial, followed by some sequence of a hilly circuit race, a road race ending atop Wachusett Mountain , and the downtown criterium. The race occurs on or around the weekend before the 4th of July.
What does "Longsjo" mean?
The race is named after Art Longsjo, Fitchburg native and the first American to compete in both the Summer (cycling) and Winter (speed skating) Olympics in the same year (1956). More information about Art Longsjo can be found on the Longsjo History Page
Where can I find information about distances, start times, etc.?
The race flyer contains all this information and can be found on this web site in several places. It is also available on www.bikereg.com on the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic registration page.
Who runs the race?
The race is run by the Longsjo Race Operations Committee under the auspices of the Fitchburg Cycling Club with lots of support from many, many others.
